Despite his previous album, i've been a pretty big Oliver Tree this past decade. I remember in 2020 before he silently delayed his album everyone in my grade were getting bowl cuts for the album. so when I went into Love You Madly Hate You Badly, I was hoping for a return to the energy seen in Ugly Is Beautiful or Cowboy Tears. Instead, this album just kinda sucks. The lead single is decent but everything else is just him going into detail about how he's going to do it with a girl. Love albums like Supergood are able good pull off the actual subject of love & making love without being so crude that im sat there kind of grossed out by the deetz. I also found this album to be kinda boring. It never demands the listeners attention nor does it have much staying power after the fact. This honestly is just not a very good or fun album like his early work. Artist don't need to be stuck in the shadow of said early work if the new stuff can be good, but I just don't feel like this is very good
A maximalist album where Oliver goes BIG in the name of love and hate. This feels like he's constantly trying to hit a home run with every swing. A lot of the lyrics are questionable towards the latter half, and many of the songs don't have anything that gripping. The opener "My Only Friend", "Joyride", "Someone Else", and "All You Ever Wanted" are the best as they happen to be when the stars align, and the crazy, bombastic elements collide properly. There is some cool heavy electronic production mixed with an almost grungy feel, but still far away from grunge or rock as a whole. When it hits, it hits well, and when it doesn't, it's a damn miss.
