Rush

This one’s special to me. I used to play the whole album from start to finish; from getting ready to the commute to my senior highschool. For that it always reminds me of rainy seasons and better times when I thought college admissions were as hard as life gets. Definitely a nostalgic album for me but “Moving Pictures” and “2112” are absolute monsters in Rush’s discography.

The Downward Spiral

The Downward Spiral

Nine Inch Nails

I cried listening to this album. I remember I listened to this album 3-4 times over and over again. It didn’t really click with me much then, I didn’t understand the hype that it brought up until one night I was just casually listening to it without hyper fixating on the lyrics of the technicalities of everything. I had gotten familiar with the first leg of the album but then *A Warm Place* comes on and suddenly I was at what felt like the eye of the storm, it felt as if everything around you is crashing down, it’s falling apart and yet you are experiencing this sudden calm. A little reprieve inside a heavily hectic and chaotic sounding album. A moment where you surface from the tide and breathe. It’s this calmness that had me suddenly feeling the weight of the album. *Eraser and Reptile* suddenly lurch you back into the chaotic mess of the album before being apprehended by *The Downward Spiral —* the song before the more popular, *Hurt.* the screams from this sounds like it’s just out of reach. It is so bone chilling. The callousness and uncaring personified voice of self-destruction. Something that has accumulated into someone that persuades, argues and manipulates. It has a name and a mouth and it’s taken over so much that it transforms our protagonist into something he can’t even recognize. Someone that’s drifting away, looking for something; anything to hold onto. That is what makes the album so haunting, As if the protagonist is being possessed by this voice in their head. This voice is Booming and explosive, announcing itself and rearing it’s head in. Here I am. It isn’t hiding, nor is it shying away from it’s greed and deprecating words. And then we get to *Hurt* and it’s already such a well known song, I figured it wouldn’t really have a bigger impact (bc I had heard it many times before) But with the added context of the album it is just so beautiful. The regret and gentle acceptance after the fact. The instrumentals, soft vocals against this pounding in the background, and the piano that comes in sounding so much like someone being laid down gently or an angel falling from grace, the intense boom after the last lyric and just this droning static afterwards. Like you’re forced to stay and witness the aftermath of what has happened inside the same room. I love that. I love that it has moments that lets you linger on it; the push and pull of the protagonists feelings. Wanting help and pushing it away. I cannot help but adore this album. Trent Reznor, whether or not he is aware of it, is so masterful in his sound design and use of instrumentals to dictate a narrative in this album that it becomes incredibly addicting after first listen. Absolutely incredible album. Incredible to experience while also being soul crushing to hear. This is an album to digest, sit with and witness.
